The Nigerian Professionals Network, USA, (NPN) in partnership with The World Bank and International Monetary Fund Nigerian Community, recently hosted a landmark event in Washington, DC. The event themed “Nurturing Nigeria’s Future: Integrating Health and Enterprise Development for Sustainable Growth” was more than just a gathering of minds; it was a clarion call for the Nigerian diaspora to play a pivotal role in shaping the country’s policy-making, healthcare, and SME development.

Diaspora Inclusion in Policy Making

Nigerian professionals from various sectors converged, all driven by a shared vision of harnessing diaspora resources and expertise for Nigeria’s sustainable growth. The discussions focused on leveraging the unique position of the diaspora in contributing to health and SME development back home. The emphasis was on actionable recommendations that can be implemented to make tangible impacts in these sectors.

Transforming Healthcare through Diaspora Engagement

The event spotlighted the need for robust primary health care systems as the foundation of a prosperous Nigerian society. Participants discussed the vast potential of diaspora networks in enhancing healthcare delivery through knowledge transfer, innovative health solutions, and strategic partnerships. The discourse revolved around not just addressing immediate health disparities but also building sustainable systems that leverage global best practices and resources.

Fostering SME Growth with Global Insights

Similarly, the discussions emphasized the critical role of the Nigerian diaspora in driving the growth and innovation of Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The conversation touched upon strategies for linking Nigerian SMEs with international markets, securing capital, and navigating global business ecosystems. The collective vision was to unlock the immense potential of Nigerian SMEs by connecting them with the broader experience and resources of the diaspora community.

The event’s success was largely due to the invaluable contributions of our distinguished speakers, each bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience to the discussions. We extend our deepest gratitude to Ms. Zainab Ahmed, Alternate Executive Director for Africa at The World Bank, for her strategic insights; Dr. Doris Anite MD, CFA , Nigeria’s Minister of Trade and Investment, for her visionary keynote remarks on Catalyzing SME growth, delivered by Edirin Akemu, Senior Special Adviser to the Minister; Ed Olowo-Okere, and Adenike Oyeyiola, for leading a thought-provoking fireside chat. We thank our panel experts Dr. Adanna Chukwuma, Patterson C. Ekeocha PhD., ANITA OKEMINI, Anuli Isichei, MPA, RN and Jonathan Eigege; and our expert contributors Chuku Chuku, Ekenem Isichei, Witney Schneidman, OLUMIDE OKUNOLA, Dr. Mohiuddin Khan, Chisom Okechukwu, for their deep dives into health and trade. Each speaker’s contribution was instrumental in fostering a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the issues at hand.

The event was anchored by Emana Shunnom,Vice President, Government Relations, NPN under the leadership of Olumide Lawal, President of the Nigerian Professionals Network, Abdul-Rahman Akande, Representative of the Steering Committee of the Nigerian Community at the World Bank & IMF, and other dedicated members of the working group. Their collective efforts were instrumental in bringing this vision to life.

Celebratory Gala/Reception

As a fitting end to a year of celebration of our collective journey, a gala was hosted at the Èkó House in Rockville, Maryland. This gala provided a moment for Nigerian professionals in the DMV area to engage in cultural festivities and strengthen the bonds of community in an evening filled with joy, music, and dance.
