In collaboration with the United Nations Staff Recreation Council, Nigeria Chapter (NAUN), a high-level conversation was convened on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA79) in New York on September 24, 2024. Themed “Empowering Nigeria’s Future: The Role of Nigerian Professionals in the Diaspora,” the event brought together prominent thought leaders, state governors, and key stakeholders to explore how Nigerian professionals abroad can actively contribute to national development and the future of Nigeria.
The event featured distinguished speakers, including Professor (Amb.) Ibrahim Gambari, Nigeria’s former Permanent Representative to the United Nations; Ahunna Eziakonwa, Assistant Secretary-General of the UNDP; H.E. Umaru Mohammed Bago, Executive Governor of Niger State, Nigeria; H.E. Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, Executive Governor of Plateau State, Nigeria; and Adebola Williams, a renowned media entrepreneur. The event was further graced by the presence of Dr. Muhammadu Indimi, Chairman of Oriental Energy Resources Limited.
The discussion highlighted the vital role that Nigerian professionals in the diaspora can play in shaping national policies, fostering economic growth, and driving sustainable development. Participants delved into strategies for enhancing engagement with the diaspora community to unlock its potential for Nigeria’s development.
The event also had the support of the Permanent Mission of Nigeria to the United Nations and UNDP Africa Front Office.
This gathering marks a critical step toward empowering the Nigerian diaspora and leveraging their expertise for the country’s future development.
